Seedance 2.0: The AI Video Model That Made Hollywood Call Its Lawyers
Someone generated a clip of Will Smith fighting a spaghetti monster. It looked like it came out of a $200 million production. It did not. It came out of Seedance 2.0, a video model from ByteDance, the company behind TikTok.
Within a week of launch, Google searches for Seedance spiked 850%. Disney and Paramount fired off cease-and-desist letters. Two US senators asked ByteDance to shut it down. Japan opened a copyright investigation.
All of this for a video generation tool that most people had never heard of until February 2026.
what actually makes seedance different
Most AI video tools work the same way. You type a prompt. The model guesses what you mean. You get something that looks cool but has nothing to do with what you actually wanted.
Seedance 2.0 takes a different approach. You can upload up to 12 files at once. Photos, video clips, audio tracks, reference images. The model reads all of them and stitches them together into one coherent video.

David Kwok runs Tiny Island Productions, a Singapore animation studio. He compared Seedance to having "a cinematographer or director of photography specialising in action films assisting you." That is high praise from someone who makes animation for a living.
But Kwok also represents the group that benefits most. His studio produces micro-dramas on tight budgets. AI tools that can generate action sequences, period settings, and sci-fi scenes without a full VFX team are not a luxury for him. They are a business enabler.
For a solo creator in a small apartment though? The 3 to 5 minute wait per generation kills the creative flow. You have an idea, you type it in, you wait, you get something close but not right, you tweak, you wait again. It adds up fast.
the spaghetti benchmark
There is an unexpected quality test floating around the AI video community. Can the model generate a convincing clip of Will Smith eating spaghetti?
It sounds like a joke. It is not. The "Will Smith spaghetti test" has become a shorthand for how far AI video has come. Early models produced nightmare fuel. Limbs in wrong places. Spaghetti where his face should be.
Seedance 2.0 passed that test convincingly. The clip looks real. Which is exactly why it made people nervous.
When an AI model can generate copyrighted characters this well, the question stops being "is it good?" and starts being "should anyone be allowed to use this?"

Seedance 2.0 is for a specific type of creator. People making short films, product ads, or branded content who need consistent characters and multi-shot narratives. Small studios in places like Singapore that produce micro-dramas on $140,000 budgets for 80 episodes.
For those people, Seedance is genuinely useful. It lets them try genres that were previously too expensive. Sci-fi. Action. Period drama. Stuff that needed visual effects budgets they could never afford.
But the aggressive content filters make it a frustrating tool for character-driven stories. And the slow generation times mean it is not great for rapid iteration.
the real story is not the technology
ByteDance knew what it was doing. The company likely understood that Seedance 2.0 could generate copyrighted characters. They released it anyway.
Why? Because the controversy is the marketing.
Shaanan Cohney, a computing researcher at the University of Melbourne, put it clearly. "There's plenty of leeway to bend the rules strategically, to flout the rules for a while and get marketing clout."
That is exactly what happened. The viral Spider-Man clips and the Hollywood backlash gave Seedance more attention than any ad campaign could. People who had never heard of ByteDance's video tools were suddenly talking about them.
And now here we are. Two US senators want it shut down. Japan is investigating. Disney sent lawyers. And ByteDance says it is "strengthening safeguards."
The tech is good. The strategy is better. But the people caught in the middle are the small creators who just want to make cool videos without getting blocked by a content filter that cannot tell the difference between Spider-Man and a guy they drew themselves.
i am still thinking about that Will Smith spaghetti video. Not because it was perfect. Because it was close enough to perfect that it made billion-dollar companies panic.
That says more about where we are than any benchmark ever could.
